엘 아나추이: 관용의 토폴로지

 

바라캇 서울은 "엘 아나추이: 관용의 *토폴로지"를 11월 26일까지 선보인다. 작가 한 사람이 만들어낼 수 있는 실제적인 변화의 힘을 조명하는데 있어 큰 의미가 있다고 생각한다. 버려진 병뚜껑에서 그것을 사용한 개개인의 흔적을 포착하고 이를 직물처럼 엮어 새로운 거대 설치 작품을 보여준다. 이로써 전통적인 예술이나 관습적인 미술에 매이지 않고 자신만의 기법으로 독특하고 화려한 금속 작품을 만들어 보여주었다.

 

나에겐 작품을 보면서 수 많은 병뚜껑들로 이루어진 금속 작품이 직물로 보여 신기하기도 하였다. 엘 아나추이는 "작품으로 새 삶을 얻게 된 병뚜껑은 더 이상 버려진 것이 아닌 메시지를 전달할 수 있는 힘을 가졌다"라고 했다. 이로써 "각 사람이 모이면 하나의 공동체가 되듯 버려진 병뚜껑들을 모아 하나의 힘으로 묶어주고 싶었지요"라고 덮붙였다.

 

 

엘 아나추이의 생각을 가지고 작품을 보니 보잘것 없는 병뚜껑이지만 심오하고 깊은 의미를 지닌 병뚜껑이였다. 병뚜껑은 세계 곳곳에서 볼 수 있는 흔한 쓰레기 혹은 금속 물체로 볼 수 있다. 하지만 엘 아나추이는 "무역을 통해 술(병뚜껑)이 미국, 아프리카, 유럽 세 대륙을 연결했던것 처럼 내 작품 또한 지구촌 사람들을 이어주는 역할을 한다고 믿는다"라고 하였다.

 

환경과 문화, 전통을 연결하는 작품을 통해 그가 생각하고 말하고자하는 메시지를 즐기면서 표현하는 모습에 인상적이다. 엘 아나추이의 작품을 통해 아프리카의 민조적, 지항학적 분류로 해석되던 것을 넘어 예술을 보는 여러 시점과 다양한 해석이 가능함을 나타낼 수 있다고 본다. 또한 그의 작품은 전시 공간에 따라 설치 방식이 변형 된다는 점에 있어 관람다들이 다양한 해석을 할 수 있는 가능성을 열어두고 있어 인상깊은 전시라고 생각된다.

 

((*토폴로지: 위치나 공간을 의미하는 그리스어 '토포스'와 학문, 지식의 뜻을 가지고 '로고스'가 결합된 단어로, 공간의 성질을 다루는 수학의 한 분야이다. 토폴로지에서의 공간은 늘림, 구김, 구부림 등의 연속적인 공간의 변형 속에서도 여전히 본래의 성질을 유지한다.))

 

EL ANATSUI TOPOLOGY OF GENEROSITY

 

El Anatsui: topology of Generosity is presented by Barakat Seoul until November 26. It sheds light on the potential of change that a single artist can generate. Discovering in the cpas of these discarded bottles traces of the individuals who have used and handled them, Anatsui weaves them together into textile-like works. Thus, his works are not just traditional and conventional works or art. He can show his own unique and colorful metal works.

 

For me, his works look like having meaning which connected with copper wire thousands of used caps from the bottles of drinks. Anatsui said "the caps discarded from the bottles have new life and have power to send message, not anymore trash." Moreover, "People closes into together then make community. Such like that the caps discarded from bottles get meaning as they into textile like works."

 

 

After read his interview and texture, the caps discarded from the bottles have profound meanings. I think the caps can see anywhere in the world and sometimes they are trash. Howeer, Anatsui believes that his works can connect each countries and contienent like trade which bottle of beer or alcoholic drink trade each countries.

 

Anatsui's message has great infleuence to think the environment, culture, and tradition. El Anatsui's work through a topological spectrum, allows one to see past a modern understading of ethnic and topographical classifications of Africa, demonstrating that multiple perspectives and diverse interpretations f his art are possible. Moreover, in the exhibition space, viewers will be able to form personal realtionships with the workds, I mean depending on space that adding to the extension of meamings and the trasnformation of the spaces
