To See Life, To See the World

보는 것을 즐거워하자, 보고 또 놀라자, 보고 또 배우자

 

 

- "인생을 보기 위하여, 세계를 보기 위하여 대사건의 증인이 되고 가난한 자와 거만한 자의 거동을 관찰하자. 기이한 물건들, 기계, 군대, 집단, 정글과 달에 걸린 그림자를 보자. 수천 킬로미터 씩 떨어진 먼 곳의 일들, 벽 뒤에 방 속에 숨겨진 일들, 위험해질 일들 ,남성에 의해 사랑받는 여자들, 또 수많은 어린이들을 보자. 보고, 보는 것을 즐거워하자. 보고 또 놀라자. 보고 또 배우자."

[Time]과 [Fortune]을 발행한 헨리 루스, 1936년에는 [Life]를 발행하며 미국 매거진의 거왕으로, 당시 미국에 제일 영향력을 가진 시민이다. [Time]에서는 한 주의 일어난 사건과 뉴스를 요약과 해석으로 발매되고, [Fortune]을 통해서 경제와 비즈니스에 대해 이야기했다. [Life]에서는 사진을 통해 정치, 문화, 사회를 미국인의 시선으로 바라보았다.

 

[Life]는 사진이 중심으로 기사는 보조적인 역활을 하는 잡지이다. [Life]사진展을 통해 그들이 무엇을 전달하고자 하였는지 알 수 있었다. 크게 Prologue를 제외하고 4가지로 구성되어있다, Face, Time, Change, Belle Epoque. Face를 통해, 우리가 누구를 기억해야하는지 그들이 무엇을 했는지 일깨워주었다. Time을 통해, 과거의 일을 과거의 일로 끝내지 않고 시대를 기억하고자 한다. Change에서는 우리가 어떻게 변화와 도전을 해왔는지 보여준다. Belle Epoque를 통해 아름다운 시절을 되새길 수 있다. 

 

4가지의 구성으로 사진展을 관람하며, 역사 혹은 과거를 사진을 통해 바라보니 글과는 다르게 느끼는 점들이 많았다. 동그란 렌즈를 통해 세상과 역사를 단순히 보여준다. 글을 통해 누군가의 생각을 전해주는 것이 아니라 사진을 바라보고 나는 어떻게 생각하고 있는가. 너는 얼마나 알고 있는가. 그것이 옳은가 등 많은 생각을 가지게 하는 사진展이였다. 

 

글로 충분히 기록을 할 수 있지만, 사진을 통해 기록하는 일도 좋은 것 같다. 마치 타임머신과 같이 사진한장으로 세월이 흘러도 어디서든 과거를 회상할 수 있고, 가고 싶은곳으로 데려갈 수 있는 힘을 가지고 있어 보인다. 나의 Life도 한장씩 남겨야겠다는 욕심이 생기는 사진展이였다.

 

 

 

Henry Luce was an American magazine magnate who was called "the most influential private citizen in the America of his day." He launched [Time] and [Fortune]. [Time] summarized and interpreted the week's news. [Fortune] explored in depth the economy and the world business. [Life] was a picutre magazine of politics, culture, and society that dominated America visual perceptions in the era.

 

[Life] is picture magazine and articles are supports the picture. Through [Time] Gallery, I can figure out what they want to say. There are consisted 4 part as Face, Time, Change, Belle Epoque. In Face, it makes us who we should remeber, and what they did. In Time, it says that the past is not just past. it tries to remember the past what happened at that time. In Change, how we change and challenge to develop the our world. In Belle Epoque, we can see the beatuiful days.

 

During I was seeing the 4 part of gallery, I felt that the pitcures are different with writing. I mean the pictures gave me another meaning and ideas about history. It shows the world and history simply through round lens. The pictures give contemplation kinds of what I know, how I did know about it, how much I know, and wheather it is right or not. Not just reading the history.

 

Writing is sufficiently to record history, and it effects on something to think. However, pictures also can record as neutrally. I believe that the pictures like Time machine. With one picute, people can remember it whenever and wherever. Thus, I think that the pictures have the power to bring somewhere you like it. As I seeing the gallery, I would like to leave some pictures which represents my life.
